Firing Range Soil Assessment, City of Globe Police Department, AZTEC

The Globe Police Department (PD) Shooting Range is located on Tonto National Forest land southeast of Globe, Arizona. AZTEC Engineering was hired by the Globe PD to write the Environmental Stewardship Plan for the Range in accordance with Forest Service requirements. Based on ACS’ experience with firing range site assessments and soil sampling projects, AZTEC selected ACS to provide site investigation tasks and recommendations regarding Best Management Practices (BMPs) for control of lead migration from the site. ACS’ tasks for this project included a review of U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) guidance for shooting ranges, on-site sampling for metals and soil properties including soil texture and pH, comparison of soil sampling results with Arizona Soil Remediation Levels (SRLs) and lead mobilization factors, establishing likely site-specific lead exposure pathways and lead mobilization factors, and providing recommendations regarding BMPs for controlling and containing off site migration of lead as well as potential lead removal and recycling options for the site. Project duration: 2007-2008.
